Mutual funds close in on FPIs in Indian equity ownership

Mumbai: Indian mutual funds are steadily catching up with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in terms of ownership of domestic equities, with the difference between the two now down to about 230 basis points—its smallest level ever.

According to NSDL data, mutual funds’ share in Indian equities climbed to an all-time high of 11.7% in September, while FPI ownership slipped below 14%. FPIs had held a peak 20% share in May 2021, whereas mutual funds were then at roughly 7%. By January this year, mutual funds’ share had already risen to 11%.

This shrinking gap is largely due to heavy selling by foreign investors alongside persistent buying by domestic mutual funds, supported by strong and continuous retail inflows into equity schemes.

“In every market, local investors usually dominate, and the same pattern is now visible in India,” said Samir Arora, founder and fund manager at Helios Capital Management. “It is reasonable to expect that over the medium term, local institutional investors will own a larger portion of the market than foreign investors.”

FPIs’ total equity assets under custody were ₹66.18 lakh crore in September, the lowest since March 2026, compared with a record ₹77.96 lakh crore in September 2024, when they held about 16.4% of Indian equities.

In contrast, mutual funds’ equity assets have grown sharply to about ₹55.14 lakh crore, up from nearly ₹20 lakh crore in April 2022. The mutual fund equity corpus doubled to around ₹40 lakh crore by January 2024 and then exceeded ₹50 lakh crore in October 2025.

“Over time, mutual funds, high-net-worth individuals and family offices together are likely to command a larger share of the market,” said Ritesh Jain, founder of Canada-based Pinetree Macro.

This shift in ownership is even more evident within Nifty 500 companies, where domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have surpassed FPIs. As per a Motilal Oswal Financial Services report, DII holdings increased for the ninth straight quarter to a record 21% in Q1FY27, while FPI holdings declined to 17%.

Sector Ownership Dynamics
The evolving structure of the Indian economy may also be shaping FPI allocation trends. Foreign investors, who traditionally concentrated on banks and IT stocks, are now diversifying beyond these core sectors.

FPI stakes have fallen across several major segments such as IT, FMCG, consumer services, real estate and financials. However, the pattern is not uniform: FPIs have raised their exposure to capital goods, metals and mining, telecom, services and healthcare.

A sustained rebound in corporate earnings will be crucial for reviving foreign interest in Indian equities, especially when other Asian markets like Taiwan and Korea are attracting attention on the back of AI-driven investments.

“If earnings grow around 14–15% annually and the currency weakens by about 2–3% a year, foreign investors could still earn roughly 12% returns,” Arora added.
